Justice & Charity

Chair:  Missy Elkins

The Justice and Charity Committee assists the poor, sick and needy of our community.

1)  Bereavement: Julie & Mike McCabe
Members support families who have experienced the death of a loved one. Members assist by preparing a dish, attending a funeral to show parish support or by helping to serve a meal after a funeral. There is also a core committee that plans meals, and a telephone committee to request food contributions. Members also prepare food for the sick and the annual nursing home luncheon.

2)  Community Outreach: Missy Elkins
Members serve a variety of volunteer services in our area. Agencies that benefit include Jeffersontown Area Ministries, Sister Visitor, Schumann Center and St. Vincent de Paul. Some responsibilities are weekly and some seasonal, such as sorting, boxing and delivering various collections of food, personal items and clothing. Members can volunteer to visit shut-ins, assist in publicizing collection drives and write newsletter articles to keep parishioners informed of outreach activities. Many volunteers are needed, both those who serve weekly, as well as those who serve only a couple of hours a year.

3)  Healthcare Professionals:
Persons trained in health care offer health information to the parish through fairs and classes. Members meet bimonthly to discuss current health care issues. Two members volunteer to offer blood pressure checks at the monthly parish breakfasts.

4Ministers of CareBonnie Evans
A
s a Minister of Care you have many opportunities to demonstrate care and concern for the elderly, sick and homebound:
ACommunion for the Homebound.  Eucharistic ministers are needed to    provide one on one visits to take Holy Communion to our homebound parishioners. These visits would be scheduled at your convenience. Training can be provided.
     B. Hurstbourne Care Center.  Volunteers are needed on a weekly basis to participate in the Friday morning prayer service at Hurstbourne Care Center in Jeffersontown. Eucharistic ministers are also needed to take Holy Communion to these same residents on Sundays. This would be a commitment of 6-8 times per year.
     C.  Meals that Heal. Volunteers are needed to prepare food for those St. Michael parishioners recovering at home from surgery or an illness. These meals are delivered by a member of the Ministers of Care committee.

5)  Respect Life:  Dawn Heuglin
Members organize functions in conjunction with the Archdiocese, including September’s “Walk for Life” and prayer service, and collect names for the annual Pro-Life page in the Courier-Journal. This is a “Respect Life” group whose concerns include the elderly and abused as well as the unborn.
