A Minister of the Word (Lector) proclaims the Scripture readings and the prayers of petition (if a Deacon is not present). A Minister of the Word is expected to prepare for liturgy in order to read with understanding and reverence. It is of value if you have some level of public speaking and are a very good reader. Youth, who are interested in this ministry, can attend training beginning in the fifth grade. An excellent book that is very helpful is “Guide for Lectors, The Liturgical Ministry Series” by Virginia Meagher and Paul Turner. Highly recommended.
